LIVESTOCK GUARDIANS

Our donkey, Pixie, is a miniature breed and guards our bucks.

Donkeys are very territorial in nature, which is a useful trait. They are strongly and instinctually aggressive to canines (dogs and coyotes) and this behavior extends protection to their pasture mates. Standard and Mammoth donkeys, can be formidable fighters – biting, kicking, slashing and chasing intruders, etc. Our miniature donkey also protects against deer. She chases them out of the pastures! Miniature donkeys have the best of intentions for guarding but their small size leaves them vulnerable to prey. For true protection, let a larger donkey, livestock guardian dog or a llama to protect your herd.

We also use Great Pyrenees, large, highly intelligent, muscular, double-coated dogs to guard our does. They were originally bred to guard sheep in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain with their white coats providing camouflage in the snow. They are vocal and have loud barks along with exceptional hearing. Because of their size, they need lots of room and food.

Our boys are full-time members of the herd and their ability to guard is instinctive. Once full grown they will weigh between 100 and 160 pounds with a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. Meet Diesel, Levi and Wrangler!
